Course Objectives
In this studio, students will collaboratively design and construct a sound-producing object that explores themes of sustainability, resourcefulness, and sonic experimentation. The project aligns with the ethos that we live in an era of material excess—our world is filled with possessions, and we have reached capacity. This project is an opportunity to reimagine waste as a valuable resource and investigate the acoustic possibilities of upcycled materials. Each group will craft a transportable, interactive sound object using repurposed materials while integrating computational and electronic elements via Processing and Arduino. The object must be deployable in various settings and engage the public in an auditory experience.
Project Objectives
- Develop an understanding of sound as a design parameter in built environments.
- Explore recycling, upcycling, and repurposing as material strategies.
- Integrate digital fabrication and interactive technology.
- Experiment with kinetics, resonance, and user interaction to create a performative experience.
- Foster collaboration, problem-solving, and rapid prototyping in a studio setting.
